Phoenix Reffaella and Severian Lowell Guide: Builds, Teams, and Gameplay
Learn how to play both Agents in Zenless Zone Zero, with recommended equipment, stat priorities, team compositions, and combat rotations.
Phoenix Reffaella and Severian Lowell Guide: Builds, Teams, and Gameplay
Phoenix Reffaella and Severian Lowell offer different approaches to combat in Zenless Zone Zero. Phoenix combines Fire Anomaly damage with effects that support her teammates’ Anomalies. Severian is a Wind Attack Agent built around sustained field time, enhanced Basic Attacks, and well-timed defensive actions.
This guide explains their core gameplay, equipment options, and team-building priorities.
Build status: Severian’s recommendations are provisional. His final English skill names and optimal equipment should be checked against his released in-game kit.
Phoenix Reffaella Guide

Phoenix is an S-Rank Fire Anomaly Agent from the Krampus Compliance Authority. She contributes Fire buildup, enables Anomaly critical hits through Sear, and triggers additional Anomaly damage through Abloom.
Key Mechanics and Abilities
Core Passive: Nirvana
When a squad member deals Anomaly damage, the enemy enters the Sear state. Anomaly damage against affected enemies can critically hit using Sear’s own critical-hit values.
This is separate from an Agent’s regular CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG. Stacking ordinary CRIT stats on Phoenix does not replace her Anomaly Mastery scaling.
Additional Ability: Krampus Ace
This activates when another squad member is an Anomaly Agent or belongs to Phoenix’s faction. It increases the CRIT DMG of Anomaly damage against enemies affected by Sear.
Pyre and Basic Attack: Purifying Flame
Phoenix builds Pyre through Combustion Attacks. With at least 90 Pyre, holding Basic Attack activates Purifying Flame.
Its finishing hit triggers Abloom when it hits an enemy affected by an eligible Attribute Anomaly. Prepare the enemy’s Anomaly before committing to the finisher.
EX Special Attacks
Her EX Special Attack sequence includes Dazzling Flare and Falling Sun. Falling Sun grants Ascension, which enables Blazing Slash.
These attacks connect with her Combustion mechanics. Follow the available prompts and resource indicators rather than repeatedly pressing Special Attack without checking her state.
Ultimate: Perpetual Resurrection
Phoenix consumes HP and enters Wither. Her follow-up, Soul-Searching Blaze, restores the HP consumed by her Ultimate, provides additional healing, and can trigger Abloom against an enemy affected by an eligible Anomaly.
Switching her back in is one way to activate this follow-up. Plan the entire sequence instead of treating the initial Ultimate explosion as the end of her rotation.
Recommended Build
| Equipment slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Signature W-Engine | Plume of Rebirth |
| Accessible W-Engine alternative | Rainforest Gourmet |
| Starting Drive Disc setup | 4-piece Freedom Blues + 2-piece Phaethon’s Melody |
| Alternative four-piece set | Chaos Jazz, depending on field time and EX Special Attack usage |
| Disc 4 | Anomaly Proficiency |
| Disc 5 | Fire DMG Bonus or ATK% |
| Disc 6 | Anomaly Mastery |
| Substat priorities | Anomaly Proficiency and ATK% |
Anomaly Proficiency improves Anomaly damage. Anomaly Mastery improves buildup and contributes to Sear’s critical-hit scaling.
For the fully upgraded Sear mechanic described here, 255 initial Anomaly Mastery reaches its CRIT Rate conversion cap. Check the initial stat rather than assuming every temporary combat buff counts toward it.
Practical Rotation
- Apply an Attribute Anomaly with a teammate.
- Bring in Phoenix and maintain Sear.
- Build Pyre through her Combustion Attacks.
- Use Purifying Flame when the target has an eligible Anomaly.
- Use her EX Special Attack sequence as resources allow.
- Activate Perpetual Resurrection.
- Complete Soul-Searching Blaze while preserving the Anomaly condition for Abloom.
This is a starting framework. Adjust the order around enemy attacks, available Energy, and teammate resources.
Team Options
Phoenix + Velina + Remielle is an Anomaly-focused composition to consider. Each Agent needs enough time to apply their effects and spend their resources.
A more accessible structure is Phoenix + a compatible Anomaly Agent + Lucy. Refresh Lucy’s ATK buff before returning to the damage dealers.
Always check Additional Ability requirements across the whole squad.
Skill Upgrade Priorities
Prioritize Core Skill, followed by Basic Attack and Chain Attack, which also governs her Ultimate-related scaling. Upgrade Special Attack next, then Assist and Dodge as resources allow.
Common Mistakes
- Building regular CRIT stats specifically for Sear.
- Using Purifying Flame without an eligible Anomaly on the target.
- Leaving the Ultimate sequence unfinished.
- Keeping Phoenix on the field while teammates sit on unused resources.
Severian Lowell Guide

Severian is an S-Rank Wind Attack Agent associated with the Metropolitan Order Division of New Eridu Public Security.
His preliminary kit points toward an on-field damage dealer who builds resources through attacks and successful defensive actions, then spends them on enhanced Basic Attacks.
Gameplay Priorities
Build resources before committing to enhanced attacks. Watch his combat indicators rather than holding Basic Attack indiscriminately.
Time defensive actions carefully. Perfect Dodges and related mechanics contribute to his offensive cycle. Repeated untimed dodges can interrupt your pressure without delivering the same benefit.
Prepare for damage windows. If your team uses a Stun Agent, enter the Stun window with resources and support buffs ready. Continue dealing damage between those windows.
Exact resource and skill names are omitted here because preliminary English localizations differ.
Provisional Build
| Equipment slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Signature W-Engine | Incarcerating Grip |
| Accessible alternative | Starlight Engine |
| Four-piece Drive Disc candidate | Dawn’s Bloom |
| Two-piece option | Woodpecker Electro |
| Disc 4 | CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG, depending on the complete build |
| Disc 5 | Wind DMG Bonus; PEN Ratio or ATK% may be alternatives |
| Disc 6 | ATK% |
| Substat priorities | CRIT Rate, CRIT DMG, then ATK% |
Dawn’s Bloom is a candidate because it strengthens Basic Attacks. Treat this as a preparation option rather than a final ranking of every set.
With Starlight Engine, activate its ATK buff through a Dodge Counter or Quick Assist before your main damage sequence.
Practical Rotation
Apply support buffs → bring in Severian → build resources through attacks and timed defensive actions → use enhanced Basic Attacks → refresh support effects → repeat.
Avoid switching him out before he spends the resources you have prepared, unless survival or the encounter requires it.
Team Building
Start with Severian + a compatible Stun Agent + a Support Agent.
A two-support composition may also work if both teammates provide useful buffs, satisfy their Additional Ability conditions, and leave Severian enough field time.
Do not choose teammates solely because they share his faction. Check how their buffs and field-time requirements interact.
Common Mistakes
- Using enhanced attacks before sufficient resources are available.
- Ignoring defensive mechanics that support resource generation.
- Stacking CRIT DMG while leaving CRIT Rate too low.
- Letting support buffs expire before a damage window.
- Treating preliminary build recommendations as final.
Phoenix or Severian: Who Fits Your Account?
Choose Phoenix if you want to develop an Anomaly team and enjoy coordinating status effects, resources, and character switches.
Consider Severian if you want a Wind main damage dealer and enjoy sustained attacks with precisely timed defensive actions.
Build a complete three-Agent squad before committing to signature equipment or additional Mindscape Cinema levels. A compatible team and a reliable rotation are the foundation of either character’s performance.
