The West Coast Main Line was built by many smaller companies during the birth of the railway era, but plans to bypass Birmingham via the Trent Valley Line materialised with that section’s opening in 1847. This line provided a more direct route for both passenger and goods trains from London to the north of England through Rugby, Lichfield and Stafford. Electrification in the 1960s saw the introduction of high-speed trains along the WCML, and following major modernisation works in the early 2000s, allowed for servces to tilt their way along at full chat; 125mph.
